Fringe Benefits

FRINGE Studded Hearts

With the summer season comes music festival season! These days, festival fashion is not just for burning man, you can adapt your boho vibe for a day in the city too. Flower crowns and frayed cut-offs might be a little over-kill in midtown but one of my favorite festival staples is fringe.

Fringe has been a dominant trend on the runway transcending seasons and markets. Designers modified the scale and the material of the edging from Spring ’14 to Resort ’15. This small accent complimented looks from free spirited to sporty and sophisticated.

For my boho inspired ensemble, I chose to layer a vintage suede vest that I picked up at the Hell’s Kitchen flea market under a soft trench. There is just a hint of fringe peaking out the bottom of the jacket the the light palette of the jacket and vest give this outfit a more feminine feel.

For a little more of an edgy look, play with contrast and combine your fringe piece with a deeper color or a stiffer fabric and vary the hem lengths between your layers. This outfit is really comfy and consists of pieces that everyone has (or should have!) in their closet — a cuffed boyfriend short, a basic tissue tee and an army jacket. Don’t forget to add your favorite accessories to top off the look. I again played with the contrast, this time between masculine and feminine, by accenting my utility jacket with a vintage pearl bracelet and pearl ear cuff.

Hi Hasalyn — if a fringe vest isn’t your style, here are some really great links to my favorite jacket, dress and jewelry that will still give you a touch of fringe when layered.

I need this jacket, it’s on my birthday list!

This dress is on sale — it would be so fun to dance in but is casual enough for day too.

Another item from my birthday list, layer this with bangles or a watch.
